Για μια εταιρεία που ουσιαστικά εφηύρε (ή τουλάχιστον έκανε δημοφιλή) τα αναδιπλούμενα flip τηλέφωνα όπως τα γνωρίζουμε σήμερα, η δέσμευση της Samsung για αυτή τη μορφή με άφησε απογοητευμένο τα τελευταία χρόνια. Ενώ η Motorola έχει προωθήσει τη θέση της στην αγορά των ΗΠΑ με καινοτόμα σχέδια και εντυπωσιακές οθόνες κάλυψης, η Samsung φαίνεται να έχει μείνει πίσω, χωρίς πρόθεση να επιστρέψει στην κορυφή.
Αυτό είναι που κάνει το Galaxy Z Flip 7 τόσο συναρπαστικό. Με μια δραματικά βελτιωμένη οθόνη κάλυψης, λεπτότερο σχεδιασμό, μεγαλύτερη κύρια οθόνη και μεγαλύτερη μπαταρία, το Flip 7 είναι το πρώτο flip τηλέφωνο από τη Samsung εδώ και καιρό που φαίνεται ότι η εταιρεία προσπαθεί πραγματικά.
Σε ορισμένους τομείς, το Flip 7 είναι το πιο εντυπωσιακό Z Flip που έχω χρησιμοποιήσει ποτέ. Αλλά ταυτόχρονα, εξακολουθεί να διατηρεί συμβιβασμούς που έχουν ταλαιπωρήσει προηγούμενα μοντέλα και εισάγει και έναν νέο.
Το Galaxy Z Flip 7 είναι ένα καλό αναδιπλούμενο, αλλά δεν είναι ακριβώς αυτό που ήθελα να είναι.
Η οθόνη κάλυψης είναι μακράν η πιο αξιοσημείωτη αναβάθμιση για το Flip 7, οπότε ας ξεκινήσουμε από εκεί. Ενώ η οθόνη κάλυψης 3,4 ιντσών στο Flip 6 ήταν λειτουργική, δεν ήταν κάτι ιδιαίτερο. Όχι μόνο ήταν μικρότερη από τον ανταγωνισμό, αλλά ήταν επίσης μια αδύναμη οθόνη συνολικά — με χαμηλή ανάλυση, αργό ρυθμό ανανέωσης και έλλειψη φωτεινότητας.
Η Samsung διόρθωσε όλα αυτά στο Galaxy Z Flip 7, και για πρώτη φορά σε ένα Z Flip, το υλικό της οθόνης κάλυψης φαίνεται σχεδόν τέλειο.
Η μετάβαση από μια οθόνη 3,4 ιντσών σε μια 4,1 ιντσών μπορεί να μην ακούγεται σαν μεγάλη υπόθεση, αλλά βάλτε το Flip 6 και το Flip 7 δίπλα-δίπλα, και η διαφορά είναι αναμφισβήτητη. Η αμήχανη οθόνη σε σχήμα φακέλου της Samsung έχει εξαφανιστεί, και στη θέση της υπάρχει μια οθόνη που γεμίζει ολόκληρο το ανώτερο μισό του Flip 7. Αυτός ο επιπλέον χώρος σημαίνει ότι οι εφαρμογές είναι πολύ καλύτερα μορφοποιημένες από το τηλέφωνο του 2024, το πληκτρολόγιο είναι πολύ πιο άνετο για πληκτρολόγηση, και τα πολύ μικρά bezels της Samsung είναι σχεδόν αδύνατα να διακριθούν.
Αλλά η Samsung δεν μας έδωσε μόνο μια μεγαλύτερη οθόνη με το Galaxy Z Flip 7· μας έδωσε και μια καλύτερη. Η ανάλυση 948 x 1,048 είναι η πιο ευκρινής που υπήρξε ποτέ σε μια οθόνη κάλυψης Z Flip, και η αύξηση της ποιότητας είναι άμεσα αντιληπτή. Ο ρυθμός ανανέωσης 120Hz είναι ευχάριστα ομαλός, και οι 2,600 nits της μέγιστης φωτεινότητας κάνουν την οθόνη εύκολη στην προβολή σε φωτεινές (και ζεστές) καλοκαιρινές ημέρες στο Μίσιγκαν.
Υπέροχο υλικό; Ελέγξτε. Τι γίνεται με το λογισμικό; Εκεί είναι που τα πράγματα παίρνουν μια στροφή προς το χειρότερο. Απλά, το λογισμικό της οθόνης κάλυψης του Galaxy Z Flip 7 είναι κακό.
Παρά τη δημιουργία μιας τόσο μεγάλης και υψηλής ποιότητας οθόνης, η Samsung εξακολουθεί να περιορίζει σημαντικά το τι μπορείτε πραγματικά να κάνετε στην οθόνη κάλυψης του Z Flip 7:
Ένα ή δύο από αυτά τα πράγματα θα ήταν αρκετά εύκολο να αγνοηθούν, αλλά είναι το πώς όλα αυτά προστίθενται κατά τη διάρκεια της καθημερινής χρήσης που τα πράγματα γίνονται απογοητευτικά — ειδικά όταν τα τηλέφωνα Razr της Motorola δεν έχουν κανένα από αυτά τα προβλήματα. Το υλικό της οθόνης κάλυψης του Flip 7 είναι τόσο καλό που θέλω να αλληλεπιδράσω με αυτό, αλλά σε κάθε άλλη στροφή, το περιοριστικό λογισμικό της Samsung είναι εκεί για να με σταματήσει από το να το κάνω.
Από την άλλη πλευρά (λογοπαίγνιο), δεν είναι όλα άσχημα νέα. Υπάρχουν κάποιες καλές ενημερώσεις φέτος, συγκεκριμένα το Gemini και το Now Brief που είναι προσβάσιμα στην οθόνη κάλυψης για πρώτη φορά. Ωστόσο, όσο κι αν έχω απολαύσει να μιλάω στο Gemini ενώ το Flip 7 είναι κλειστό, δεν είναι αρκετό για να με αποσπάσει από όλα όσα η Samsung δεν άλλαξε ή διόρθωσε φέτος.
Πολλοί από τους παραπάνω περιορισμούς έχουν μεταφερθεί από το Galaxy Z Flip 6. Ως εκ τούτου, φαίνεται τεμπέλικο για τη Samsung να δημιουργήσει μια τόσο προφανώς καλύτερη οθόνη κάλυψης και στη συνέχεια να μην βελτιστοποιήσει το λογισμικό για να την εκμεταλλευτεί. Αυτό θα έπρεπε να ήταν μια εύκολη επιτυχία για τη Samsung, αλλά αντίθετα, φαίνεται μισοτελειωμένο.
Ενώ η οθόνη κάλυψης είναι η πιο προφανής αλλαγή υλικού στο Z Flip 7, δεν είναι η μόνη.
Το Galaxy Z Flip 7 είναι λεπτότερο από το Flip 6, με πάχος μόλις 13,7mm όταν είναι κλειστό, αντί για 14,9mm. Ως κάποιος που πέρασε αρκετό χρόνο με το Flip 6 πέρυσι, νομίζω ότι είναι μια αρκετά σημαντική διαφορά. Ενώ δεν είναι τόσο λεπτό όσο το Galaxy Z Fold 7, το Flip 7 τώρα αισθάνεται περισσότερο σαν ένα συμπαγές τηλέφωνο όταν είναι διπλωμένο, παρά σαν δύο τηλέφωνα τοποθετημένα το ένα πάνω στο άλλο.
Αυτός ο λεπτότερος σχεδιασμός οφείλεται στο νέο μεντεσέ του Galaxy Z Flip 7, ο οποίος επιτρέπει επίσης μια σχεδόν ανύπαρκτη τσάκιση στην εσωτερική οθόνη. Μπορείτε ακόμα να τη δείτε υπό ορισμένο φωτισμό, αλλά είναι σχεδόν αδύνατη στην αφή. Το Galaxy Z Flip 6 είχε ήδη μια σχεδόν ανεπαίσθητη τσάκιση, και το Flip 7 είναι ακόμα καλύτερο.
Μιλώντας για την εσωτερική οθόνη, υπάρχουν σημαντικές αναβαθμίσεις και για αυτήν. Χάρη στο μεγαλύτερο μέγεθος των 6,9 ιντσών, τα λεπτότερα πλαίσια και την πιο παραδοσιακή αναλογία διαστάσεων 21:9, η κύρια οθόνη του Z Flip 7 επιτέλους αισθάνεται όπως κάθε άλλο "κανονικό" τηλέφωνο. Κάθε προηγούμενη οθόνη του Z Flip ήταν πιο ψηλή και στενή από ένα κανονικό τηλέφωνο, αλλά αυτό δεν ισχύει πλέον στο Flip 7, και είναι υπέροχο στη χρήση.
Από το πρώτο Galaxy Z Flip, η Samsung πάντα περιλάμβανε ένα τσιπ Qualcomm Snapdragon στα αναδιπλούμενα τηλέφωνά της, όπως κάνει για τη συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των smartphone της στις ΗΠΑ. Πριν από την κυκλοφορία του Flip 7, αναμενόταν να αποκτήσει το τσιπ Snapdragon 8 Elite της Qualcomm. Ωστόσο, όπως φάνηκε, η Samsung επέλεξε το δικό της τσιπ Exynos 2500.
Το Snapdragon 8 Elite είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα τσιπ smartphone που έχουμε δοκιμάσει ποτέ, οπότε η είδηση ότι το Flip 7 δεν θα το είχε ήταν απογοητευτική. Αλλά μεταφέρεται αυτή η απογοήτευση στη χρήση στην πραγματική ζωή;
Μετά από τη δοκιμή του Galaxy Z Flip 7 με τη συνηθισμένη σειρά δοκιμών μας, το Exynos 2500 είναι άμεσα εμφανές — και όχι με καλό τρόπο.
Τα GeekBench 6 και PCMark 3.0 (που δοκιμάζουν την απόδοση της CPU και τη συνολική απόδοση, αντίστοιχα) δείχνουν ότι το Flip 7 έχει παρόμοια, αν όχι χειρότερη, απόδοση σε σύγκριση με το περσινό Galaxy Z Flip 6 και το τσιπ Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Σε σύγκριση με το Motorola Razr Ultra και το Galaxy S25 Ultra, και τα δύο με το Snapdragon 8 Elite, το Galaxy Z Flip 7 αποδίδει σημαντικά χειρότερα. Στη δοκιμή GeekBench, το Flip 7 είχε ελαφρώς καλύτερη απόδοση multi-core CPU από το Flip 6, αλλά υστερούσε στις δοκιμές single-core και κατέλαβε την τελευταία θέση στο PCMark.
Στρέφοντας την προσοχή στις δοκιμές GPU, το Flip 7 ξεπέρασε το Flip 6 σε όλες τις τρεις δοκιμές 3DMark, έστω και ελάχιστα στις Wild Life και Wild Life Extreme. Εν τω μεταξύ, το Razr Ultra εξακολουθεί να έχει ένα αρκετά κυρίαρχο προβάδισμα πάνω από όλα τα τρία αναδιπλούμενα.
Κοιτάζοντας πιο κοντά τις επιμέρους δοκιμές, υπάρχουν μερικά αξιοσημείωτα σημεία. Το Flip 7 είχε τη χειρότερη σταθερότητα σε σύγκριση με το Flip 6 και το Razr Ultra, σημειώνοντας λίγους πόντους κάτω από το Flip 6 σε κάθε δοκιμή και σημαντικά πίσω από το Razr. Ενδιαφέρον είναι ότι το Flip 7 παρέμεινε πιο δροσερό από το Flip 6 σε όλες τις τρεις δοκιμές, αλλά και πάλι, το Razr Ultra εξακολουθεί να αποδίδει καλύτερα συνολικά.
Ανεκδοτολογικά, το Flip 7 έχει αποδώσει χωρίς σφάλματα για βασικές καθημερινές εργασίες, όπως τον έλεγχο των μηνυμάτων στο Slack, την παρακολούθηση του YouTube, την περιήγηση στο X και τη λήψη μερικών φωτογραφιών. Είναι ένα γρήγορο και αξιόπιστο τηλέφωνο, αν και είναι εμφανές ότι η απόδοση έχει πληγεί με την επιλογή της Samsung για το Exynos 2500 αντί του Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Το αν θα το παρατηρήσετε εξαρτάται εξ ολοκλήρου από το πόσο πιέζετε το smartphone σας, αλλά όλο αυτό δεν μου φαίνεται σωστό. Για ένα τηλέφωνο που ξεκινά από $1,100 — ακόμα και για ένα αναδιπλούμενο όπως αυτό — θα πρέπει να περιμένετε κορυφαία απόδοση. Ενώ το Exynos 2500 μπορεί να είναι ένα καλό τσιπ (ακόμα και εξαιρετικό), δεν είναι σαφώς το καλύτερο.
Όσον αφορά τη διάρκεια ζωής της μπαταρίας, η μπαταρία των 4,300mAh είναι απολύτως επαρκής. Αν χρησιμοποιείτε το τηλέφωνό σας με φειδώ, κυρίως σε Wi-Fi και με δύο έως τρεις ώρες χρόνου οθόνης (κυρίως χρησιμοποιώντας κοινωνικές εφαρμογές, email, YouTube, και χωρίς παιχνίδια), μπορείτε να ξεκινήσετε τη μέρα σας γύρω στις 6:30 π.μ. και να φτάσετε στις 11:00 μ.μ. με 40% μπαταρία να απομένει. Ωστόσο, αν περνάτε τον περισσότερο χρόνο σας σε 5G, παίζετε μερικά παιχνίδια και γενικά χρησιμοποιείτε το τηλέφωνό σας περισσότερο, το Galaxy Z Flip 7 είναι σταθερά ένα smartphone μιας ημέρας.
Οι ταχύτητες φόρτισης, δυστυχώς, είναι απογοητευτικές. Το Galaxy Z Flip 7 διαθέτει την ίδια ενσύρματη φόρτιση 25W όπως το Flip 6. Ωστόσο, για κάποιο λόγο, το Flip 7 χρειάζεται περισσότερο χρόνο για να φτάσει στο 100% και γίνεται σημαντικά πιο ζεστό στη διαδικασία — πιθανώς λόγω του τσιπ Exynos.
Το Flip 7 χρειάστηκε 91 λεπτά για να φορτίσει από περίπου 2% έως 100%, ενώ το Flip 6 χρειάστηκε 85 λεπτά. Αυτό δεν είναι μια δραματική διαφορά, αλλά δεν είναι καλό να βλέπεις το νεότερο τηλέφωνο να χρειάζεται περισσότερο χρόνο για να φορτίσει πλήρως την μπαταρία. Πιο ανησυχητική είναι η μέση θερμοκρασία φόρτισης του Flip 7 στους 36,6 °C / 97,88 °F, που είναι σημαντικά πιο ζεστή από τη μέση θερμοκρασία φόρτισης του Flip 6 στους 29,5 °C / 85,1 °F.
Το Galaxy Z Flip 7 διαθέτει μια γνώριμη ρύθμιση κάμερας σε σύγκριση με το Galaxy Z Flip 6, και με γνώριμη εννοώ πανομοιότυπη. Όπως και πέρυσι, το Flip 7 διαθέτει μια κύρια κάμερα 50 megapixel και μια υπερευρυγώνια κάμερα 12MP, καθώς και μια selfie κάμερα 10MP στην εσωτερική οθόνη.
Επίσης, όπως και πέρυσι, αυτό σημαίνει ότι το Galaxy Z Flip 7 μπορεί να τραβήξει μερικές ωραίες φωτογραφίες, αν και ποτέ δεν ξεπερνά το να είναι μια "καλή" κάμερα για να γίνει "εξαιρετική".
Σε καταστάσεις με άφθονο φωτισμό, η κύρια κάμερα του Galaxy Z Flip 7 αντέχει καλά. Τα χρώματα σε όλες τις φωτογραφίες είναι έντονα και καλά κορεσμένα, αν και όχι σε υπερβολικό βαθμό. Μου αρέσει πώς το ηλιοβασίλεμα φωτίζει το ποτήρι μπύρας στην πέμπτη φωτογραφία, και τα χρώματα στις φωτογραφίες του χάμπουργκερ και των λουλουδιών είναι απλά υπέροχα.
Οποιαδήποτε από αυτές τις φωτογραφίες θα φαινόταν υπέροχη στο Instagram ή στο Threads, αλλά καθώς αρχίζετε να εξετάζετε τα pixel, παρατηρείτε μερικούς από τους περιορισμούς της κύριας κάμερας. Στη φωτογραφία της γάτας μου, για παράδειγμα, το τρίχωμα γύρω από το μέτωπό του φαίνεται κακώς ακονισμένο, με το τρίχωμα γύρω από τα μουστάκια του να μοιάζει με ακουαρέλα. Η εικόνα της πινακίδας Rocket Fizz δείχνει επίσης τι συμβαίνει όταν τα φώτα χαμηλώνουν. Ενώ τα κόκκινα και μπλε φώτα φαίνονται υπέροχα, υπάρχει πολύς θόρυβος στο νυχτερινό φόντο πίσω τους. Παρόλα αυτά, είμαι κυρίως ευχαριστημένος με το πώς βγήκε.
Δυστυχώς, αυτό δεν συμβαίνει πάντα. Η νυχτερινή φωτογραφία της πινακίδας του κινηματογράφου είναι αρκετά κακή, με την κύρια κάμερα να μπερδεύεται εντελώς από τα φωτεινά φώτα. (Ενδιαφέρον είναι ότι η υπερευρυγώνια κάμερα έκανε καλύτερη δουλειά εδώ.)
Τα προβλήματα χαμηλού φωτισμού του Flip 7 είναι ακόμη πιο εμφανή όταν εμπλέκονται κινούμενα θέματα. Προσπάθησα να τραβήξω μερικές φωτογραφίες σε μια πρόσφατη παράσταση που πήγα, αλλά κάθε φωτογραφία που έβγαλα ήταν μια θολή και εκτός εστίασης ακαταστασία — με πολλές από τις λήψεις μου χειρότερες από αυτές που βλέπετε παραπάνω. Το Flip 7 πέτυχε τη διάθεση των φώτων της σκηνής, αλλά δεν υπάρχει καμία λεπτομέρεια και παντού υπάρχει έντονος θόρυβος.
Αυτό που λέγεται, δεν είναι όλα κακά νέα. Χάρη στη φύση του ως flip phone, οι κύριες και υπερευρυγώνιες κάμερες του Flip 7 είναι εξαιρετικές για selfies — πολύ καλύτερες από ό,τι θα παίρνατε σε οποιοδήποτε slab phone. Οι ίδιες ελλείψεις ισχύουν, αλλά σε σύγκριση με την κάμερα selfie σε ένα τηλέφωνο όπως το Galaxy S25, αυτό είναι πολύ καλύτερο.
Μιλώντας για την υπερευρυγώνια κάμερα, είναι καλή! Το πεδίο θέασης 123 μοιρών σας επιτρέπει να καταγράψετε πολύ περισσότερο από τη σκηνή, χωρίς η εικόνα σας να καταστρέφεται από ένα άσχημο εφέ fish-eye. Διατηρεί επίσης παρόμοια χρώματα και τη συνολική αίσθηση της κύριας κάμερας. Δεν είναι κάτι που θα σας εντυπωσιάσει, αλλά είναι ένας συνεπής και αξιόπιστος δευτερεύων αισθητήρας.

Το Galaxy Z Flip 7 είναι ένα ενδιαφέρον smartphone. Μεταξύ του νέου υλικού της οθόνης κάλυψης και του βελτιωμένου σχεδιασμού, η Samsung αποδεικνύει ότι έχει ακόμα πολλά να προσφέρει σε αυτήν την κατηγορία. Αλλά σε άλλες πτυχές, είτε είναι το απογοητευτικό chip Exynos είτε οι απλά καλές κάμερες, φαίνεται ότι η Samsung δεν κάνει αρκετά. Και με μια υψηλή αρχική τιμή των 1.100 δολαρίων, σημαίνει ότι η απάντηση στο "Πρέπει να αγοράσετε το Galaxy Z Flip 7;" δεν είναι αυτόματα ναι.
Προς τιμήν της Samsung, το Galaxy Z Flip 7 εξακολουθεί να έχει μερικά αξιοσημείωτα πλεονεκτήματα έναντι του ανταγωνισμού Razr. Το Flip 7 είναι το μόνο αναδιπλούμενο flip phone στις ΗΠΑ με επτά χρόνια ενημερώσεων Android, και η υποστήριξη μετά την πώληση της Samsung για οποιεσδήποτε επισκευές μπορεί να χρειαστείτε είναι πολύ καλύτερη από αυτήν που προσφέρει η Motorola. Επιπλέον, υπάρχει το πλεονέκτημα του Z Flip 7 που υπάρχει μέσα στο ευρύτερο οικοσύστημα της Samsung.
Αν δίνετε μεγάλη αξία σε αυτές τις ενημερώσεις Android και την ηρεμία που έρχεται με το καλύτερο δίκτυο επισκευών της Samsung — και αν έχετε άλλες συσκευές Samsung όπως ένα Galaxy Watch ή Galaxy Buds — το Galaxy Z Flip 7, ακόμα και με τις ελλείψεις του, είναι το καλύτερο flip phone που μπορείτε να αγοράσετε.
Ωστόσο, αν αυτά τα πράγματα δεν έχουν τόση σημασία για εσάς, θα υποστήριζα ότι το Flip 7 δεν είναι η καλύτερη επιλογή για ένα κορυφαίο flip phone.
Για τα χρήματά μου, θα προτιμούσα να αγοράσω το Motorola Razr Ultra ($1099.99 στο Amazon). Το έχω αναφέρει μερικές φορές ήδη σε αυτήν την κριτική, και αυτό γιατί είναι το κόσμημα του τι πρέπει να είναι ένα αναδιπλούμενο flip phone το 2025. Σε σύγκριση με το Flip 7, το Razr Ultra διαθέτει ένα σημαντικά καλύτερο chipset, μεγαλύτερη διάρκεια ζωής μπαταρίας, πολύ ταχύτερη φόρτιση και λογισμικό οθόνης κάλυψης που αντιμετωπίζει σχεδόν όλα τα προβλήματα με την προσέγγιση της Samsung. Η τιμή των 1.300 δολαρίων είναι πιο ακριβή από το Flip 7, αλλά οι συχνές πωλήσεις της Motorola σημαίνουν ότι τελικά δεν θα πρέπει να σας κοστίσει πολύ περισσότερο από την αγορά ενός Flip 7.
Το βασικό Motorola Razr (2025) ($599.99 στο Amazon) αξίζει επίσης να εξεταστεί. Έχει μικρότερη οθόνη κάλυψης, λιγότερο ικανό επεξεργαστή και λιγότερη RAM από το Z Flip 7, αλλά κοστίζει επίσης σημαντικά λιγότερο με μόλις 700 δολάρια. Επιπλέον, εξακολουθείτε να έχετε πολύ καλύτερο λογισμικό οθόνης κάλυψης, μεγαλύτερη μπαταρία από το Flip 7 και ταχύτερη φόρτιση, επίσης. Το Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE ($899.99 στο Amazon) υπάρχει επίσης αν θέλετε ένα ελαφρώς φθηνότερο Flip, αλλά το Razr (2025) είναι μια πολύ καλύτερη συμφωνία.
Το Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 δεν είναι με κανένα τρόπο ένα κακό smartphone. Σε ορισμένα θέματα, είναι το πιο εντυπωσιακό Z Flip που έχει κυκλοφορήσει ποτέ η Samsung, και για το σωστό άτομο, είναι το καλύτερο flip phone που μπορείτε να αγοράσετε.
Αλλά η Samsung είχε την ευκαιρία να κάνει το Galaxy Z Flip 7 το αδιαμφισβήτητο καλύτερο flip phone της χρονιάς, και τελικά, αυτό δεν είναι αυτό που πήραμε. Αντίθετα, το Flip 7 είναι απλώς ένα άλλο καλό flip phone που (για άλλη μια φορά) ξεπερνιέται από τον ανταγωνισμό.

While Motorola has pushed the niche forward in the US with innovative design finishes and impressive cover screens, Samsung has found itself lagging, seemingly with no intention of getting back on top.That’s what makes the Galaxy Z Flip 7 so exciting. With a dramatically improved cover screen, a thinner design, a larger main display, and a bigger battery, the Flip 7 is the first flip phone from Samsung in a while where it feels like the company is actually trying.In some ways, the Flip 7 is the most impressive Z Flip I’ve ever used. But in that same breath, it still retains compromises that have plagued previous models, and introduces a new one, too.The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a good foldable, but it’s not quite the one I wanted it to be. The good (and bad) of the Z Flip 7’s cover screenJoe Maring / Android AuthorityThe cover screen is by far the most noticeable upgrade for the Flip 7, so let’s start there. While the 3.4-inch cover screen on the Flip 6 was serviceable, it wasn’t anything to write home about. Not only was it smaller than the competition, but it was also just a weak panel overall — with a low resolution, slow refresh rate, and lacking brightness.Samsung fixed all of this on the Galaxy Z Flip 7, and for the first time ever on a Z Flip, the cover screen hardware feels just about perfect.The jump from a 3.4-inch screen to a 4.1-inch one may not sound like a big deal, but put the Flip 6 and Flip 7 side-by-side, and the difference is undeniable. Gone is Samsung’s awkward folder-shaped display, and in its place is a screen that fills up the entirety of the Flip 7’s upper half. This extra space means apps are much better formatted than on 2024’s phone, the keyboard is much more comfortable to type on, and Samsung’s teeny tiny bezels are almost impossibly thin. But Samsung didn’t just give us a bigger screen with the Galaxy Z Flip 7; it also gave us a better one. The 948 x 1,048 resolution is the sharpest ever on a Z Flip cover screen, and the jump in quality is immediately noticeable. The 120Hz refresh rate is nice and smooth, and the 2,600 nits of peak brightness make the screen easy to view on bright (and hot) summer days in Michigan.Great hardware? Check. What about the software? That’s where things take a turn for the worse. Simply put, the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s cover screen software is bad.Joe Maring / Android AuthorityDespite creating such a large and high-quality panel, Samsung still greatly limits what you can actually do on the Z Flip 7’s cover screen: You still have to jump through the Good Lock and MultiStar hoops to run any Android app on the cover screen. You can’t edit or add new clock faces on the cover screen. You can’t add, remove, or edit widgets on the cover screen. You can’t edit quick settings toggles on the cover screen. You can’t multitask/see your recent apps on the cover screen. You can’t use third-party keyboards (like Gboard) on the cover screen. You can’t rotate the cover screen to use it in a different orientation. Joe Maring / Android AuthorityOne or two of these things would be easy enough to ignore, but it’s how they all add up throughout daily use where things get frustrating — especially when Motorola’s Razr phones don’t have any of these issues. The Flip 7’s cover screen hardware is so good that I want to interact with it, but at every other turn, Samsung’s restrictive software is there to stop me from doing so. On the flip side (pun intended), it’s not all bad news. There are some good updates this year, namely Gemini and Now Brief both being accessible on the cover screen for the first time. However, as much as I’ve enjoyed talking to Gemini while the Flip 7 is folded shut, it’s not enough to distract me from everything Samsung didn’t change or fix this year.Many of the above limitations are carried over from the Galaxy Z Flip 6. As such, it comes across as lazy for Samsung to create such an obviously better cover screen and then not optimize the software to take advantage of it. This should have been an easy slam dunk for Samsung, but instead, it feels half-baked. A thinner design and a larger display make a big differenceJoe Maring / Android AuthorityWhile the cover screen is the most obvious hardware change on the Z Flip 7, it isn’t the only one.The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is thinner than the Flip 6, measuring just 13.7mm thick while closed instead of 14.9mm. As someone who spent a fair amount of time with the Flip 6 last year, I think it’s a pretty substantial difference. While not as thin as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Flip 7 now feels more like a compact phone when folded, rather than two phones stacked on top of each other.This thinner design is thanks to the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s new hinge, which also allows for a barely-there crease on the inner display. You can still see it under certain lighting, but it’s barely perceivable to the touch. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 already had a hardly noticeable crease, and the Flip 7’s is even better.Joe Maring / Android AuthoritySpeaking of the inner display, there are key upgrades for it as well. Thanks to a larger 6.9-inch size, thinner bezels, and a more traditional 21:9 aspect ratio, the Z Flip 7’s main display finally feels just like any other “normal” phone. Every previous Z Flip display has been taller and narrower than a regular slab phone, but that’s no longer the case on the Flip 7, and it feels wonderful to use. The Exynos elephant in the roomJoe Maring / Android AuthorityGoing back to the very first Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung has always included a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip in its foldable flip phones, just as it does for the vast majority of its US smartphones. Leading up to the Flip 7’s release, it was expected to get Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. However, as fate would have it, Samsung instead opted for its own Exynos 2500 chipset.The Snapdragon 8 Elite is one of the best smartphone chips we’ve ever tested, so learning that the Flip 7 wouldn’t have the silicon came as a disappointment. But does that disappointment carry over to real-world use?After running the Galaxy Z Flip 7 through our usual series of benchmarks, the Exynos 2500 is immediately apparent — and not in a good way. GeekBench 6 and PCMark 3.0 (which test CPU and overall performance, respectively) show that the Flip 7 has similar, if not worse, performance compared to last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 and its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Compared to the Motorola Razr Ultra and Galaxy S25 Ultra, both of which feature a Snapdragon 8 Elite, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 performs considerably worse. In our GeekBench test, the Flip 7 eked out slightly better multi-core CPU performance than the Flip 6, but it fell behind in single-core tests and came in last place in PCMark.Joe Maring / Android AuthorityTurning to GPU benchmarks, the Flip 7 outperformed the Flip 6 in all three 3DMark tests, even if just barely so in Wild Life and Wild Life Extreme. Meanwhile, the Razr Ultra still holds a fairly commanding lead above all three foldables. Looking closer at the individual tests, there are a couple of notable points. The Flip 7 had the worst stability compared to the Flip 6 and the Razr Ultra, scoring a few points below the Flip 6 in each test and significantly behind the Razr. Interestingly, the Flip 7 stayed cooler than the Flip 6 across all three tests, but once again, the Razr Ultra still performed the best overall. While the Exynos 2500 may be a good chip (great, even), it's clearly not the best. Anecdotally, the Flip 7 has performed without fault for basic day-to-day tasks, such as checking Slack messages, watching YouTube, scrolling through X, and snapping a few pictures. It’s a responsive and reliable phone, although it’s evident that performance has taken a hit with Samsung opting for the Exynos 2500 over the Snapdragon 8 Elite.Whether or not you notice that entirely depends on how much you push your smartphone, but the whole thing doesn’t sit right with me. For a phone that starts at $1,100 — even for a foldable like this — you should expect top-of-the-line performance. While the Exynos 2500 may be a good chip (great, even), it’s clearly not the best.Joe Maring / Android AuthorityAs for battery life, the 4,300mAh battery is perfectly adequate. If you use your phone sparingly, mostly on Wi-Fi and with two to three hours of screen-on time (primarily using social apps, email, YouTube, and no gaming), you can start your day at around 6:30 am and get to 11:00 pm with 40% battery still remaining. However, if you spend most of your time on 5G, play a few games, and generally use your phone more, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is firmly a one-day smartphone.Joe Maring / Android AuthorityCharge speeds, unfortunately, are disappointing. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 features the same 25W wired charging as the Flip 6; however, for some reason, the Flip 7 takes longer to reach 100% and becomes significantly hotter in the process — potentially a result of the Exynos chip.The Flip 7 took 91 minutes to charge from approximately 2% to 100%, whereas the Flip 6 took 85 minutes. That’s not a dramatic difference, but it’s still not great to see the newer phone taking longer to charge to a full battery. More concerning is the Flip 7’s average charging temperature of 36.6 °C / 97.88 °F, which is significantly hotter than the Flip 6’s average charge temp of 29.5 °C / 85.1 °F. Good cameras, but not amazing camerasJoe Maring / Android AuthorityThe Galaxy Z Flip 7 features a familiar camera setup compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 6, and by familiar, I mean identical. Just like last year, the Flip 7 touts a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera, plus a 10MP selfie camera on the inner display.Also, just like last year, that means the Galaxy Z Flip 7 can capture some nice-looking photos, although it never really goes beyond being a “good” camera to a “great” one. In situations with ample lighting, the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s primary camera holds up well. Colors across all photos are bold and well-saturated, though not to an overwhelming degree. I love how the sunset is shining through the beer glass in the fifth photo, and the colors in the hamburger and flower photos are just lovely.Any of these pictures would look great on Instagram or Threads, but as you start pixel-peeping, you notice some of the primary camera’s limitations. In the photo of my cat, for example, the fur around his forehead appears poorly sharpened, with the fur around his whiskers resembling a watercolor painting. The picture of the Rocket Fizz sign also shows what happens when the lights go down. While the red and blue lights look great, there’s a lot of noise in the night background behind them. Still, I’m mostly happy with how it turned out. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. The nighttime photo of the movie theater sign is pretty bad, with the primary camera getting completely tripped up by the bright lights. (Interestingly, the ultrawide camera did a better job here.)The Flip 7’s low-light woes are even more apparent when moving subjects are involved. I tried to snap a few pictures at a recent show I went to, but every photo I took was a blurry and unfocused mess — with many of my shots worse than the ones you see above. The Flip 7 nailed the mood of the stage lights, but there’s just zero detail and rampant noise everywhere you look. That said, it’s not all bad news. Thanks to the nature of it being a flip phone, the Flip 7’s primary and ultrawide cameras are excellent selfie shooters — much better than what you’d get on any slab phone. The same shortcomings apply, but compared to the selfie camera on a phone like the Galaxy S25, this is worlds better. Speaking of the ultrawide camera, it’s good! The 123-degree field-of-view allows you to capture a lot more of the scene at hand, all without your picture being ruined by an unsightly fish-eye effect. It also maintains similar colors and the overall vibe of the primary camera. But with a disappointing choice in its chipset and truly annoying cover screen software, the Flip 7 isn't an amazing flip phone. It's a great buy for Samsung fans, but it's also not the flip phone king it could have been.For a company that basically invented (or at the very least popularized) foldable flip phones as we know them today, Samsung’s commitment to the form factor has left me disappointed over the last couple of years. While Motorola has pushed the niche forward in the US with innovative design finishes and impressive cover screens, Samsung has found itself lagging, seemingly with no intention of getting back on top.That’s what makes the Galaxy Z Flip 7 so exciting. With a dramatically improved cover screen, a thinner design, a larger main display, and a bigger battery, the Flip 7 is the first flip phone from Samsung in a while where it feels like the company is actually trying.In some ways, the Flip 7 is the most impressive Z Flip I’ve ever used. But in that same breath, it still retains compromises that have plagued previous models, and introduces a new one, too.The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a good foldable, but it’s not quite the one I wanted it to be. The good (and bad) of the Z Flip 7’s cover screenJoe Maring / Android AuthorityThe cover screen is by far the most noticeable upgrade for the Flip 7, so let’s start there. While the 3.4-inch cover screen on the Flip 6 was serviceable, it wasn’t anything to write home about. Not only was it smaller than the competition, but it was also just a weak panel overall — with a low resolution, slow refresh rate, and lacking brightness.Samsung fixed all of this on the Galaxy Z Flip 7, and for the first time ever on a Z Flip, the cover screen hardware feels just about perfect.The jump from a 3.4-inch screen to a 4.1-inch one may not sound like a big deal, but put the Flip 6 and Flip 7 side-by-side, and the difference is undeniable. Gone is Samsung’s awkward folder-shaped display, and in its place is a screen that fills up the entirety of the Flip 7’s upper half. This extra space means apps are much better formatted than on 2024’s phone, the keyboard is much more comfortable to type on, and Samsung’s teeny tiny bezels are almost impossibly thin. But Samsung didn’t just give us a bigger screen with the Galaxy Z Flip 7; it also gave us a better one. The 948 x 1,048 resolution is the sharpest ever on a Z Flip cover screen, and the jump in quality is immediately noticeable. The 120Hz refresh rate is nice and smooth, and the 2,600 nits of peak brightness make the screen easy to view on bright (and hot) summer days in Michigan.Great hardware? Check. What about the software? That’s where things take a turn for the worse. Simply put, the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s cover screen software is bad.Joe Maring / Android AuthorityDespite creating such a large and high-quality panel, Samsung still greatly limits what you can actually do on the Z Flip 7’s cover screen: You still have to jump through the Good Lock and MultiStar hoops to run any Android app on the cover screen. You can’t edit or add new clock faces on the cover screen. You can’t add, remove, or edit widgets on the cover screen. You can’t edit quick settings toggles on the cover screen. You can’t multitask/see your recent apps on the cover screen. You can’t use third-party keyboards (like Gboard) on the cover screen. You can’t rotate the cover screen to use it in a different orientation. Joe Maring / Android AuthorityOne or two of these things would be easy enough to ignore, but it’s how they all add up throughout daily use where things get frustrating — especially when Motorola’s Razr phones don’t have any of these issues. The Flip 7’s cover screen hardware is so good that I want to interact with it, but at every other turn, Samsung’s restrictive software is there to stop me from doing so. On the flip side (pun intended), it’s not all bad news. There are some good updates this year, namely Gemini and Now Brief both being accessible on the cover screen for the first time. However, as much as I’ve enjoyed talking to Gemini while the Flip 7 is folded shut, it’s not enough to distract me from everything Samsung didn’t change or fix this year.Many of the above limitations are carried over from the Galaxy Z Flip 6. As such, it comes across as lazy for Samsung to create such an obviously better cover screen and then not optimize the software to take advantage of it. This should have been an easy slam dunk for Samsung, but instead, it feels half-baked. As someone who spent a fair amount of time with the Flip 6 last year, I think it’s a pretty substantial difference. While not as thin as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Flip 7 now feels more like a compact phone when folded, rather than two phones stacked on top of each other.This thinner design is thanks to the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s new hinge, which also allows for a barely-there crease on the inner display. You can still see it under certain lighting, but it’s barely perceivable to the touch. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 already had a hardly noticeable crease, and the Flip 7’s is even better.Joe Maring / Android AuthoritySpeaking of the inner display, there are key upgrades for it as well. Thanks to a larger 6.9-inch size, thinner bezels, and a more traditional 21:9 aspect ratio, the Z Flip 7’s main display finally feels just like any other “normal” phone. Every previous Z Flip display has been taller and narrower than a regular slab phone, but that’s no longer the case on the Flip 7, and it feels wonderful to use. The Exynos elephant in the roomJoe Maring / Android AuthorityGoing back to the very first Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung has always included a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip in its foldable flip phones, just as it does for the vast majority of its US smartphones. Leading up to the Flip 7’s release, it was expected to get Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. However, as fate would have it, Samsung instead opted for its own Exynos 2500 chipset.The Snapdragon 8 Elite is one of the best smartphone chips we’ve ever tested, so learning that the Flip 7 wouldn’t have the silicon came as a disappointment. But does that disappointment carry over to real-world use?After running the Galaxy Z Flip 7 through our usual series of benchmarks, the Exynos 2500 is immediately apparent — and not in a good way. GeekBench 6 and PCMark 3.0 (which test CPU and overall performance, respectively) show that the Flip 7 has similar, if not worse, performance compared to last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 and its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Compared to the Motorola Razr Ultra and Galaxy S25 Ultra, both of which feature a Snapdragon 8 Elite, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 performs considerably worse. In our GeekBench test, the Flip 7 eked out slightly better multi-core CPU performance than the Flip 6, but it fell behind in single-core tests and came in last place in PCMark.Joe Maring / Android AuthorityTurning to GPU benchmarks, the Flip 7 outperformed the Flip 6 in all three 3DMark tests, even if just barely so in Wild Life and Wild Life Extreme. Meanwhile, the Razr Ultra still holds a fairly commanding lead above all three foldables. Looking closer at the individual tests, there are a couple of notable points. The Flip 7 had the worst stability compared to the Flip 6 and the Razr Ultra, scoring a few points below the Flip 6 in each test and significantly behind the Razr. Interestingly, the Flip 7 stayed cooler than the Flip 6 across all three tests, but once again, the Razr Ultra still performed the best overall. While the Exynos 2500 may be a good chip (great, even), it's clearly not the best. Anecdotally, the Flip 7 has performed without fault for basic day-to-day tasks, such as checking Slack messages, watching YouTube, scrolling through X, and snapping a few pictures. It’s a responsive and reliable phone, although it’s evident that performance has taken a hit with Samsung opting for the Exynos 2500 over the Snapdragon 8 Elite.Whether or not you notice that entirely depends on how much you push your smartphone, but the whole thing doesn’t sit right with me. For a phone that starts at $1,100 — even for a foldable like this — you should expect top-of-the-line performance. If you use your phone sparingly, mostly on Wi-Fi and with two to three hours of screen-on time (primarily using social apps, email, YouTube, and no gaming), you can start your day at around 6:30 am and get to 11:00 pm with 40% battery still remaining. However, if you spend most of your time on 5G, play a few games, and generally use your phone more, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is firmly a one-day smartphone.Joe Maring / Android AuthorityCharge speeds, unfortunately, are disappointing. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 features the same 25W wired charging as the Flip 6; however, for some reason, the Flip 7 takes longer to reach 100% and becomes significantly hotter in the process — potentially a result of the Exynos chip.The Flip 7 took 91 minutes to charge from approximately 2% to 100%, whereas the Flip 6 took 85 minutes. That’s not a dramatic difference, but it’s still not great to see the newer phone taking longer to charge to a full battery. More concerning is the Flip 7’s average charging temperature of 36.6 °C / 97.88 °F, which is significantly hotter than the Flip 6’s average charge temp of 29.5 °C / 85.1 °F.
